About the Studio
Creating an office with the comfort of a home, in limited space and on a startup's budget is an audacious task. The Project being an architecture and design firm's studio should promulgate the design philosophy of the firm. Architecturally this space reflects DENCITY's values and personality – integrity, sophistication, simplicity, and authenticity.
The design solution addresses the unique requirements by way of distinct program zoning (Meet, Work and Create), which converse with one another through a play of material and surface. Since the firm deals in designing, contextualized spatial experience was the best way to interpret the characteristics and culture of the firm. In the studio different office scenes in different spaces like the waiting area, work-station and the architect's chamber is designed to showcase different tastes of design which are independent functionally but connected spatially.
The intension of creating a first impression is limited to the entrance. It should look presentable, because the firm has client's coming in. The offbeat design off the Entrance is conceptualized as 'leaves rustling in the wind'. The leaves flow seamlessly through different materials used in the paneling of the main door. Cut, engraving and pasting methods were used in a preordained manner to bring about the desired result.
If you have a creative idea and it saves money, go for it.
Limited budget narrowed, usable finish material to the cheapest ones. It was inevitable to rethink the conception of finishing - finishing with non-finish material, using raw wood with minimum surface treatment. The archaic method of using timber for furniture is used but in a contemporary avatar. Each piece of furniture is astutely designed to use littlest of raw material, slender cross leg tables are inexpensive compared to conventional wood table because of absence of aprons, stretchers and 50% less frames.
'Raw' can be evaluated as pure, rather than rough.
It is thought that raw materials rough feeling could be mitigated with use of fancy finishing materials like laminate or polish. We opted for materials that are not commonly thought of for work spaces and tried to use them sensibly to establish a core identity, combining wood & glass. Teak was the wood of choice because of its very imperfections. Discernible face grains of the timber create enough drama in the monochrome minimalistic design. Specific timber was hand-picked for each piece of furniture and aesthetically arranged in a rhythm, one of the basic ordering principles of design.
Interior sets mood
We know it from our personal experience that interior makes a direct impact on our mood and can give an impetus to work and creativity. We decided to make a spacious light room. It is without saying that bright and spacious rooms, application of specific materials, in short, a modern working environment promotes creativity. The walls and the ceiling, with its white surface painting, form an ideal background for creative thinking. In addition, a multimedia system consisting of projector, monitor and sound system have been installed. Together a dynamic working space whose mission is to catalyze, connect and support new ideas that intend to create a mark is achieved.
Space constraint? Go Multi-Functional
Multifunctional and Mixed-use design of the hall as a true integration of different functions in time and space, was approached to optimize the small space. The 230 square feet hall is shrewdly used to accommodate a waiting area, a work station and a meeting 'area'. These spaces have been adroitly separated by use of the virtual sense of space definition. These characters are defined by placement of furniture's and their orientation. The settee faces a bulletin board displaying selective ongoing projects of the firm. Adjacent is a desk with two work stations, virtually separated at eye level with vertical translucent glass. At the end is a meeting table with electronic appliances for audio-visual presentation.
Design is undoubtedly subjective. One's perception of a design can be totally different from another. We believe 'Design is in the Details'. The lounge table has four wheels, like a cart , carved in wood giving a sense of momentum. Nature is not just outside, the side table has a pot with Aralia variegated and hybrid Epipremnum aureum (money plant) to add a little green in indoor environment. Dypsis lutescens (Areca palm) beside the entrance conceptualizes the philosophy of being 'green', being sustainable of the firm. Words cut in MDF board fixed on the ceiling add compositeness to rather obvious false ceiling, words like 'CET, Love, Coffee, Art, Sustainable' are part of the composition which perfectly describe the emotions and philosophy of the firm. Embellishing it are alphabets
